EEG Controlled Wheelchair
This project explores the use of electroencephalography (EEG) or brainwaves to provide an alternative method of wheelchair control for users with limited upper-body motor function. By translating brain activity into intentional commands, our team is developing a system that could enable users to interact with a powered wheelchair without relying solely on traditional physical controls.
Project Goals
- Develop an accessible and intuitive method of controlling a powered wheelchair using EEG signals.
- Design and integrate hardware, software, and machine learning systems to acquire and interpret brain activity.
- Prioritize reliable and safe command detection to support practical wheelchair navigation.
Design Highlights
- Joystick Attachment: Attaches to existing wheelchair joystick controls, allowing users to add EEG-based control without purchasing an entirely new wheelchair.
- Custom EEG Cap: Developing a custom EEG cap designed for comfortable, reliable, and effective acquisition of neural signals.
- Safety Features: Developing an emergency stop command and obstacle detection system to promote safe and reliable wheelchair operation.
